About Monomarks

Monomarks is an open social bookmarking tool, in the general mould of Pinboard, Delicious (RIP) and Linkding. It's an experiment in working with AT Protocol, mildly inspired by this blog post, made by me with significant help from The Robots.

Features

  • Save interesting bookmarks easily using a bookmarklet
  • Tag and annotate them
  • Check out other people's bookmarks
  • Subscribe to interesting topics

Why AT Protocol?

This question is almost impossible to answer in terms that a normal person understands; this suggests that the answer is "who cares?" But!

  • You own your content - Monomarks are stored with your AT Proto database, which in most cases is hosted by Bluesky (for now). If Monomarks shuts down, and surely it will, all the effort you put in to collecting bookmarks will not be lost.
  • It's portable - Bluesky is storing your stuff for now, but you could take it elsewhere if you wanted, and this app would continue to function.
  • It's decentralised - No single company controls the network (although practically this doesn't mean much when barely anybody is participating in the network.)

Get Started

To start using Monomarks, you'll need an AT Protocol account, which is most likely a Bluesky account.

Privacy

I care for your privacy in the way I hope others care for mine.

  • Your bookmarks are yours - They're stored in your AT Protocol Personal Data Server (PDS), which you control. I don't own and won't try to sell your data.
  • Public by default - Bookmarks you create are publicly visible to anyone who knows your handle or finds them through the discover page. This is a social bookmarking tool, not a private archive. If and when ATProto introduces more granular privacy controls, I will adopt their approach here as well.
  • Authentication - We use secure OAuth authentication through ATProto. We store encrypted session cookies to keep you logged in for 30 days.
  • What this app collects - The app caches your profile information (handle, display name, avatar) and your bookmarks for performance. We log failed authentication attempts to prevent abuse. We don't track your browsing behavior or use analytics products that can personally identify you.
  • Rate limiting - We implement rate limiting to prevent abuse and ensure fair usage for all users.
  • Data deletion - You can delete bookmarks anytime through the app. They'll be removed from both Monomarks and your PDS. To fully delete your account and all your bookmarks, delete it through your ATProtocol provider (e.g. Bluesky).
